Cautions/Warnings for Adrenal Pro
As with any natural health product, you should consult a healthcare practitioner on the use of this product especially if you are taking any medication including antibiotics, dopamine, anti-hypertensive’s, anti-psychotics, anti-coagulants, birth control pills or thyroid hormones or if you have any medical condition including diabetes, hyperthyroidism, Grave’s Disease or an auto-immune disorder.

Specific Interactions/Cautions
Vitamin B6 is one of the few water-soluble vitamins that can become toxic if taken in large or moderates doses over a long period of time. Chronic intake of over 500 mg of B6 per day can result in toxicity if taken daily for many months or years with reports of doses as low as 150 mg per day causing problems (although the problem seems to be with the liver breaking down large doses at once therefore spreading the doses into three 50 mg doses throughout the day would likely not cause a problem).

What are the Adrenals and what do they do?

The adrenals are two small glands the size of a grapes located on top of the kidneys. They are responsible for our body’s fight-or-flight response and they help the body to cope with stress. Each adrenal gland has two compartments, the inner cortex and the outer cortex. The inner adrenal cortex regulates the secretion and regulation of two hormones called epinephrine and nor epinephrine that are responsible for the body’s fight-or-flight response. The outer adrenal cortex is responsible for producing three major hormones:

  • cortisol (a major stress hormone, a natural glucocorticoid or steroid)
  • aldosterone (responsible for sodium and water retention)
  • DHEA (is a hormone related to the area of the adrenals that produces the sex hormones)

What is Adrenal Fatigue?

Adrenal Fatigue is a common disorder that affects millions of people throughout North America. As described earlier, the adrenals are our ‘fight or flight’ glands, that help us to deal with stress - either immediate or chronic. Prolonged or overly intense stress (physical, mental or emotional) can lead to adrenal fatigue. For example, adrenal fatigue may develop as a result of chronic emotional stress or worry, long hours of work, surgery, poor nutrition, regular consumption of alcohol or medications or chemotherapy. Adrenal Fatigue is the consequence of the adrenal glands no longer being able to adequately meet the constant demands to perform. In our high-stress culture, the body’s ‘fight-or-flight’ response is activated so often that eventually our adrenals become depleted and exhausted and fail to function appropriately.

Cortisol and its Functions

Cortisol is an important hormone involved in the stress response. It also helps to regulate glucose metabolism, blood pressure, the immune system, liver detoxification and inflammation. When the body is under stress, cortisol will be released. Cortisol, once released, will give the body a quick burst of energy for ‘combat’, heightened memory functions and increased immunity. As well, it helps the body to maintain homeostasis (balance and normal functioning) under stress. In our high-stress culture, the body’s ‘fight-or-flight’ response is activated so often that it doesn’t always have a chance to return to normal. This results in chronic stress and chronically high levels of cortisol in the body.Prolonged elevation of cortisol in the bloodstream can have a negative impact on our health such as

  • lowered immunity levels
  • impaired cognitive performance
  • suppressed thyroid function
  • blood sugar imbalances
  • decreased bone density
  • decreased muscle tissue
  • elevated blood pressure
  • elevated cholesterol
  • increased abdominal fat (which is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular diseases like heart attack or stroke)

Aldosterone and its Functions

Aldosterone is a hormone that helps balance minerals within the cells of our body, especially sodium, magnesium and potassium and the fluid within our bloodstream, cells and tissues. It also assists in the regulation of blood pressure. Stress increases the release of aldosterone, causing sodium retention (leading to water retention) and the loss of two important minerals - potassium and magnesium. However, prolonged fatigue can eventually lead to a reduction in aldosterone and a loss of sodium in the body. Salt (sodium) craving is therefore a common symptom in Adrenal Fatigue.

DHEA and its FunctionsThe adrenal cortex also produces small amounts of several of the sex hormones. One of the key sex hormones it produces is DHEA. DHEA is a precursor in the manufacturing of many other hormones such as: estrogen, testosterone, progesterone and cortisol. These hormones are used for energy, vitality and reproduction.Additionally, DHEA plays a major role in stress control. Stress stimulates the body to secrete both cortisol and DHEA. DHEA interacts with cortisol to maintain a balance between them. An imbalance between the two can lead to stress disorders. DHEA has a dampening or calming effect on stress. Thus, the body is usually able to terminate the stress response. However, its success at doing so is dependent upon the amount of available DHEA. Adrenal Fatigue often presents itself with decreased levels of DHEA making it very difficult for the body to calm itself down.

Medicinal Ingredients

Rhodiola rosea - Rhodiola rosea, also known as Roseroot, is a traditional folk remedy used to increase physical endurance, work productivity, longevity and resistance to high altitude sickness and to treat fatigue, depression, infections and nervous system disorders. Recent scientific research confirms that rhodiola has adaptogenic properties (an ability to increase resistance to stressors).

Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus) - Siberian Ginseng is a medicinal herb used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for increasing stamina, boosting the immune system and increasing longevity. Eleutherosides, the main active components found in Siberian Ginseng, are responsible for the plant’s adaptogenic activity. Scientific research on Siberian Ginseng conducted in Russia supports the use of this herb to maintain health and generally strengthen the system. Siberian Ginseng may help the body deal with physically and mentally stressful exposures such as heat, cold, physical exhaustion, viruses, bacteria, chemicals, extreme working conditions, noise and pollution.[1] By strengthening the system, it may also help prevent illness.

Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera) – Ashwagandha, which is commonly referred to as Indian Ginseng, has been an important herb in the Ayurvedic and indigenous medical systems for thousands of years. Ashwagandha root contains flavonoids and many active ingredients of the withanolide class. Several studies have demonstrated that Ashwagandha has anti-stress, antioxidant, mind-boosting, immune-enhancing and rejuvenating properties.[2]

Schisandra extract - Schisandra is a traditional Chinese Herb that possesses adaptogenic properties and supports optimal adrenal function. It enhances the immune system through its antioxidant effects and is believed to promote longevity. It has the ability to increases the energy supply to the brain and body, thus it aids in cognitive function and forgetfulness.[3] In Chinese medicine it is frequently used to combat fatigue and alleviate stress.

Astragalus extract (Astragalus membranaceus) - Astragalus has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years, often in combination with other herbs, to strengthen the body against disease and stress. It contains antioxidants, which protect cells against damage caused by free radicals (byproducts of cellular energy). It has been prescribed for centuries for general weakness or chronic illness and to increase overall vitality.[4]

L-Tyrosine - L-tyrosine is the vitamin form of the amino acid tyrosine. Amino acids play a central role in the body both as building blocks of proteins and as intermediaries in metabolism. The body makes tyrosine from phenylalanine which is an amino acid found in beef. Tyrosine serves as a precursor for the synthesis of various hormones including thyroid and pituitary hormones and many of the hormones involved in the stress response. It is also a very important neuro-transmitter. Supplementation with L-tyrosine is known to help in the management of various forms of stress – both physical and psychological, as well as sleep deprivation.[5] [6] Some practitioners will recommend L-tyrosine as being helpful for weight loss and improving moods.

Pantothenic Acid (vitamin B5, calcium d-pantothenate) – Pantothenic acid is one of eight water-soluble B vitamins. Vitamin B5 is critical to the manufacture of red blood cells as well as sex and stress-related hormones produced in the adrenal glands. It is sometimes referred to as the "anti-stress" vitamin because it is believed to enhance the activity of the immune system and improve the body's ability to withstand stressful conditions. Pantothenic acid is also essential for the conversion of fat and sugar into energy.[7] [8] Pantothenic acid is present in most cells in the body but is found in higher amounts in the adrenals because so much energy is required to produce all the adrenal hormones.

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine HCL) - Vitamin B6, also called pyridoxine, is one of eight water-soluble B vitamins. Pyridoxine is considered to be an "anti-stress" vitamin because it is believed to enhance the activity of the immune system and improve the body's ability to withstand stressful conditions. In addition, B6 is an important co-factor for a large number of enzyme pathways in the adrenal gland and almost every body system relies on this vitamin for optimal function. Some important enzymes that require vitamin B-6 include those that are responsible for amino acid (protein) metabolism, the formation of essential fatty acids and the formation of certain neurotransmitters. Vitamin B6 also helps the body to properly assimilate proteins and fats.Frequently Asked Questions
